Starting in October, 106,000 displaced people in camps in Wau, Juba and Bor South will not receive monthly food rations for the rest of the year.
Over the next four months, WFP needs an additional US$154 million to provide sufficient amounts of food assistance.
“If funding levels continue to drop, we may have no choice but to make further cuts as the needs of vulnerable communities continue to outstrip available resources,” said Mr. Hollingworth.In recent years, food insecurity has continued to rise and currently affects more than 60 percent of South Sudan, according to the WFP. The three-month suspension is part of a broader reduction in food assistance across all camps announced in April, under which 700,000 refugees and internally displaced people currently receive only half the caloric content of a WFP food ration.
Before implementing the cuts, WFP and its partners campaigned to prepare affected communities.
